“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39b
The Archbishop William Temple said: “The Church is the only society that exists for the benefit of those who are not its members.” At Holy Trinity, we understand the “Church” not as a building, or even an organization. We are the Church, gathered together by God in common cause to heal a broken world.
Our community extends far beyond our church doors to include our neighbors in West Central, one of the poorest neighborhoods in the state. Our ministries seek not only to alleviate suffering where we can, but to restore relationship. Our consistent use of radical hospitality and inclusiveness remind us that church isn’t about us—it’s about all of us.
HT Dinner Table gathers 80 to 100 neighbors each week for a hot, family-style meal. This ministry has become a nexus for healing and community for guests and volunteers alike. In this context, the rich eat alongside the poor, the broken share table with the healed, and the lost are not alone. So palpable is the presence of God, that some of our guests refer to this Wednesday night meal as “going to church.” Volunteers and donors from the Spokane area and beyond make this ministry possible. We have also worked with our neighbors to transformed Holy Trinity’s vacant lot into a thriving community garden. In addition to providing produce for HT Dinner Table and an opportunity for neighbors to garden, we often find the hungry gleaning fresh vegetables from the beds. This offers another opportunity for relationship, and we pray that the garden will become a catalyst for community organizing and action. Learn more about Trinity Gardens.
In addition to our corporate ministries we collaborate with our partner ministries in West Central and beyond. We encourage and equip one another to be missionaries in our own lives—in our families, workplaces, and community—wherever God has placed us.
