As some of you know, I’m not a cradle Episcopalian. Before departing the Church for a twenty-year walkabout, I spent several years of my youth in the Assembly of God church—a denomination where hell was bright red real, and the Holy Spirit was palpable and ever-present.

One night, my high school friends and I boarded a rattling, retired school bus and traveled with our youth group to Spokane to hear the great evangelist preach. I don’t remember his name or anything he said,
